Some things are not meant
to be explained.

They cannot be classified,
codified, defined, or
understood.

They simply are what they
are.

Any who seek to to do
those things would be just
as effective in trying to
describe

the majesty of a sunrise...

and the fury of a storm.

Like the former, these
things should simply be
experienced and
appreciated.

When that is not possible
they must, like the latter,
simply be accepted.

After all, it is the mystery
that gives them their magic.

The question I hear most about my fiction is, "Where do you get your story ideas?"

I wish I knew the answer. The truth is, I don't find the stories. They find me.
Sometimes, in a flash, I get the entire outline for a manuscript. Other times, scenes
and characters reveal themselves more slowly.

As far as advice for other fiction writers, the best I can offer is to let the story come
as it will. Don't get too caught up in trying to make it perfect on first write. You can
make time later to make it right. The important thing is to capture the inspiration
when it hits, before you forget details that give a scene its power. You don't have to
write a story from Page 1 straight through to the end. It's okay to skip around,
writing the story as it comes. You can add chapters later to serve as glue between
those critical scenes.

With regard to the technicals of writing, I'm still a fan of the classics:
  • The AP Stylebook
  • Strunk and White, The Elements of Style
